"Kamal Musallam & Mercedes Luján" A Night of Arabic Flamenco and Beyond
13 December 2022
International Music

Dubai Opera presents The Arabic-Flamenco Duo of Kamal Musallam and Mercedes Luján for one mesmerizing performance on 13 December 2022.

Musallam is one of today’s most sought-after guitarists and modern oud players in jazz fusion, having achieved international acclaim for his innovative merging of Genres with Arabic sounds and rhythms. Since his move to the United Arab Emirates in 2002, Kamal has released eight successful albums, including two official Grammy Award Selections. He collaborated with such luminaries as Sting, Yo-Yo Ma, Billy Cobham, Bobby McFerrin and George Benson, and performed at the world’s most prestigious music festivals.

Mercedes Sanguiao Horneros, better known as Mercedes Luján, is considered by many to be the best female flamenco guitarist in the contemporary scene. Despite her youth, Luján has accompanied many of the leading flamenco singers and artists, such as Rocío Márquez, Sorderita, Luis Aguilé and Chano Lobato.

This Duo aims to present a brand of musical collaboration based on both artists' musical cultures and deep traditions. Both artists are prominent performers of their respective musical traditions; where Mercedes can play pure Flamenco guitar, Kamal can perform fluently the Maqams on the oud. However, both are so diverse in their musical knowledge and appreciation of the different genres, from Jazz to Pop, world music and other. The synergy between both artists has proven to be one of a kind leading each time to a magical musical outcome. It is a show that is worth your attention and surely not to be missed!
