Prepare to be awed by the spoken word as the finest contemporary poets from the UAE and UK unite on stage at Dubai Opera in this celebration of the power of poetry to bring people together across cultures.

Presented by The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Dubai Opera and The British Council, with the support of the UK GREAT campaign, ‘For the Love of Words’ aims to explore the possibilities presented by cultural exchange between the two countries.

The event, which will form part of the UK/UAE 2017 Year of Creative Collaboration closing celebrations, will include the following all-star line-up:

Harry Baker

 

 

Author of ‘The Sunshine Kid’ and World Poetry Slam Champion, known for his wordplay and rhymes.

Roger McGough

One of Britain’s most prolific and best-loved poets for both adults and children. He has been called ‘the patron saint of poetry’ by Carol Ann Duffy.

Lemn Sissay

Explosive performance poet, current chancellor of Manchester University and official poet of the 2012 Olympics.

Imtiaz Dharker

Poet, artist and documentary film-maker. Awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry; her collections include ‘Leaving Fingerprints’ and ‘Over the Moon’.

Carol Ann Duffy

One of Britain’s most admired poets and current UK Poet Laureate; best known for the critically-acclaimed poetry collection ‘The World’s Wife’.

Simon Armitage

Author of numerous poetry collections and novels, including ‘Seeing Stars’ and ‘Walking Away’. Current Professor of Poetry at Oxford and named Millennium Poet in 1999.

John Agard

Award-winning playwright, poet, short-story and children’s writer widely known for his poem ‘Half Caste’.

Grace Nichols

Award-winning poet of several collections including ‘I is a Long-Memoried Woman’ and ‘Picasso, I Want My Face Back’, in addition to several novels and children’s books.

Afra Atiq

First female Emirati spoken word artist, the first Emirati to perform at the legendary Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe in New York, and winner of the PoetsNY poetry slam.

Nujoom Al Ghanem

Award-winning Emirati film-maker of ‘Rain, Sky and Dust’ and ‘Nearby Sky’. Writer of ‘Angels of Distant Longing’, among other collections.

Khalid Al Budoor

Emirati modernist poet, film producer and co-founder of the Emirati Writers’ Union. Winner of the Al-Khal Poetry Award.
